The 2016 Phillips Collection payed homage to the impact of the ‘arabesque’ on modern art, and honored the artistic exchange and cultural diplomacy between the State of Qatar and the US.
Led by diplomatic chair Mohammed Jaham al-Kuwari, the Qatari ambassador to the United States, the 95th Phillips Collection Gala celebrated all things ‘arabesque’ with custom decor, florals, tabletop and a creative menu that highlighted the harmonious exchange of cultures.
Guests were welcomed with Sultan Sour Cocktails and Ginger-Grapefruit Mocktails and traditional Middle Eastern bites of Keftah, Spinach and Feta Bourek, Falafel and Lamb on Zatar-spiced Crisps.
Dinner was served in galleries throughout the museum. Each gallery was designed to reflect the vibrant Qatari culture with richly patterned linens; saturated, jewel-toned lighting; silky swags and tassels; chic tabletop decor and abundant florals and plants.
A springy first course of seared Scallops, Shrimp, Fava Beans and Gold Beets in a toasted Cumin Vinaigrette was presented in a nest of Asparagus Ribbons.
The French served main course delighted guests with Middle Eastern flavors. Meshwi-style grilled Beef and Lobster Kebabs were presented with Saffron Basmati Rice and charred Vegetables dusted with Aleppo Pepper.
Tiny Bonbons, stamped with arabesque patterns were served before guests headed to the tented Courtyard for a lavish buffet of Middle Eastern sweets.
The night was still young as Gala guests ventured to Dock 5 Union Market, for the high-energy Contemporaries Bash, ‘Dreaming of Doha’.
Guests danced with gauzy scarves in an amazing kinetic, air sculpture by Daniel Wurtzel. An Arabic calligraphy mural was created by artists during the party. Outside Dock 5, Pour-over Coffee and Falconry! Mike Dupuy‘s majestic falcons entertained guests. DJ Ben Chang kept the party going and the dance floor full with high energy tunes.
