Phillips Maifest

The  2017 Phillips Collection Gala was bursting with springtime!  The annual event had a ‘Maifest’ theme that was inspired by the German celebration of the arrival of spring.  The Gala honored the museum’s longstanding relationship with the German Embassy, and celebrated the artistic exchange and cultural diplomacy between the United States and Germany.

Washington’s philanthropic and diplomatic set enjoyed cocktails in the Phillips’ tented courtyard with traditional German drinks and small bites.BZ1A3497BZ1A3516066A9625-1

Garnishes were readied for the Apfelstrudel, a bubbly German cocktail made with sparkling wine, apple juice, vanilla syrup, and vodka.




Passed hors d’oeuvres included Wiener Schnitzel with Grune Sosse, Strammer Otto and Liptauer mousse with gooseberries in toast tassies.

During cocktails, Phillips Director Dorothy Kosinski, chats with diplomatic chairs, Mrs. Huberta von Voss-Wittig and His Excellency Peter Wittig,the Ambassador of Germany.



The galleries throughout the Phillips were designed in a sleek style with modern linens, contemporary placesettings, vibrant florals and lush greens.

The dinner menu carried on the springy Maifest theme with a petite sorrel soup sip garnished with chive blossoms and a tiny radish with sweet butter and Maldon sea salt.066A9599-1

Bright blue borage blossoms garnished the Spargel (white asparagus) panna cotta with a salad of kholrabi, apple and pink radishes. Delicate cucumber ribbons and nasturtium leaves completed the pretty plate.066A9575

For dinner, guests tucked into pumpernickel-crusted veal loin with Butterkase pretzel dumplings, smoked Brussels sprouts, baby beets and carrots. The sauce was prepared with Bock, a strong dark German beer brewed in the fall and drunk in the spring.066A9704BOnbon Salted Pretzel 1The dinner ended on a sweet note with Occasions’ signature chocolate salted pretzel bonbons.

After dinner, guests dashed across town to Dock 5 for the Contemporaries Bash. The cocktail-dance party was inspired by the sights and sounds of Berlin’s underground nightlife.
